Johnny's Pork Roll & Coffee Truck - Asbury Park, NJ
As stated by Augie Carton, from Carton Brewing, "There is no discussion. It is pork roll. That is the name John Taylor gave it when the government pointed out that there is zero ham in what was formerly called 'Taylor's Prepared Ham'. So Taylor called it pork roll." Many years have passed since that. And the debate continues about what to call it, but what there isn't a debate about is - how excellent Johnny's Pork Roll & Coffee Truck is.
Are you going to be at the beach near North Eats at Asbury Park? You need to come here. They have a second truck at the Farmer's Market in Red Bank, but I believe one of the best pork roll sandwiches in New Jersey needs to be experienced at the shore of one of the most happening beaches in Monmouth County.
There's quite a few choices on the menu and I've had a few of them in the past. This very well may be the only place where I've never ordered the traditional pork roll, egg and cheese on a hard-roll SPK. I think I pretty much owe it to myself to do so once Carton Brewing releases Regular Coffee next time. Other wise, if you're a fan of variety with your pork roll, Johnny's got you covered. Things are kept simple, yet delicious.
I believe the home fries are a new addition and a much welcomed one! I don't remember seeing them last year, but you can add them onto any of your sandwich orders, and you should. They are very well seasoned, incredibly tasty and very well done. And for just $2 added onto your sandwich, it's a deal you really cannot pass up. It's a 115% guarantee that with each sandwich I order from now on, the home fries are being added.
Every time I stand in line at Johnny's, I hear at least one or two more people ordering The Hawaiian. It's four heavenly slices of thick cut pork roll with swiss cheese, pineapples and a BBQ sauce mixed in with sriracha that is to die for. The sauce gives the sandwich a unique kick and the pineapple blends in incredibly well. I might be imagining things again, but I believe the sriracha might be a newer addition. If I'm correct, then I love it. If I'm wrong, then I still love it. This is easily one of my favorite to order at this food truck.
If you follow the food truck on Instagram or on Facebook, sometimes they'll showcase a sandwich that isn't on the current menu. My advice: Follow them on social media. This past weekend, I ordered The Cuban. It's delicious cuts of pork roll, ham, cheese, pickles, and mustard. Now, I'll admit, I do not like pickles at all. But if there is something I also don't like, it's to take something out of the equation because of my pickiness. So, I ordered "as is", trusted Johnny, and I was absolutely blown away by this. The pork roll is cooked to perfection and the cheese, pickles and mustard give it the last bit of oomph. After I finished it, I actually sat in my beach chair still thinking about it. This might be a new favorite for me at Johnny's Pork Roll. I've learned my lesson and absolutely will pay more attention to the social media to see what else he comes up with.
If you're by the North Eats section of Asbury Park and have a hankering for a pork roll sandwich, you need to check out this food truck. Some might say that the prices are a little high, I will say, it's absolutely worth the price of "admission". Want to take it to go to have with a beer? Have a nice refreshing session beer like a Carton BOAT. I've had a Kane Head High to go with the Hawaiian to kick up the spice and highlight the hops. It's a great combination overall.
I love the beach and on the weekends, I love my pork roll sandwiches. Thanks to Johnny's Pork Roll & Coffee Truck, as well as the town of Asbury Park, both of these things have combined to produce a wonderful tag team of beach and food. Visit the beach, eat more pork roll!
